Something’s gotta give…
Bayern Munich defender Kim Min-jae picked up an unnecessary yellow card in the 28th minute during the team’s 2-1 loss to Inter Milan in the Champions League. That one play would have a massive impact later in the match when head coach Vincent Kompany did not trust the center-back to scale back his aggression.
The manager removed Min-jae in the 75th minute in favor of Sacha Boey, who played a key role in allowing the game-winning goal. To no one’s surprise, Kompany confirmed he made the move to sub out Min-jae because he did not want to risk losing the center-back for the second leg (via @iMiaSanMia):
Asked whether Kim Min-jae was subbed off due to an injury, Vincent Kompany says the main factor for the substitution is because Kim was on a yellow card.
With Dayot Upamecano, Alphonso Davies, and Hiroki Itō all out injured — and Boey either injured or benched for most of the season — it is fair to question whether or not Kompany hit the panic button too early. It is understood that it might be standard practice to protect a player in that situation, but with the extenuating circumstances that Bayern Munich is facing regarding its depth, either Min-jae needs to be more disciplined or Kompany needs to be more trusting.
