The Serie A leaders are not easy to score upon. But they’ll rest on no laurels heading into a second leg next week at San Siro.
Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi took a deserved half-victory lap after a 2-1 Champions League win over Bayern Munich on Tuesday.
It was the Bavarians’ first home defeat in the competition in 22 games. But as the Inter boss well knows, there’s an entire second leg to play.
“I have to compliment the boys. But it’s only half time, in seven days there will be the return match against a very strong team,” Inzaghi remarked after the match in comments captured by @iMiaSanMia. “We’ve done something important at the home of a team that has won 23 of its last 27 games here in the Champions League. We will have to follow up this great performance at San Siro in front of our fans in seven days.”
The San Siro was the recent setting of a Nations League clash between the two countries — Germany prevailing 2-1, Bayern’s Leon Goretzka scoring the decisive goal. So don’t expect Bayern to back down from the occasion.
But Inter has every reason to be delighted and is now a team on the upswing. Star man Alessandro Bastoni talked about his side’s mentality following a recent 2-2 draw against Parma.
“This win means a lot after a big disappointment in Parma,” the defender said in comments captured by Italian journalist Daniele Mari (via @iMiaSanMia). “We can do great things only by playing like this. From an individual point of view, there are teams stronger than us — but together we will be annoying for everyone.”
I Nerazzurri currently have a slim lead atop Serie A as they try to find off a late challenge from Napoli. Like Bayern, they are competing on two big fronts…and like the Bavarians, taking nothing for granted.
Not even after a fantastic first leg result in Munich.
