Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton could reportedly become coaches at Manchester United when their contracts expire this summer.

Heaton has only ever made three first-team appearances for Man United, but the 38-year-old is in his second spell at Old Trafford, starting his professional career with the Red Devils before returning on a free transfer in the summer of 2021.

The experienced goalkeeper has once again been the number three for the 20-time English champions this term, providing support to Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir, but he has not made a single appearance since the 2022-23 season.

Heaton’s contract at Old Trafford is due to expire this summer, but according to the Daily Mail, his time at Man United may not be over, as he could be offered a coaching opportunity with the club.

The report claims that Evans is in a similar situation, with the experienced centre-back likely to retire from professional football this summer due to his injury troubles during the 2024-25 campaign.

Evans returned to Man United in the summer of 2023, and the arrangement was for him to build his fitness with a view to joining another club, but his performances led to him signing a one-year deal at Old Trafford.

The Northern Irishman was excellent during the 2023-24 campaign, making 30 appearances in all competitions, which led to his contract being extended, and he has made 12 appearances this term.

The 37-year-old has not featured since the middle of December, though, due to a muscular issue, and he was again absent from training on Wednesday, with the team preparing for Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final first leg against Lyon.

Like Heaton, Evans could allegedly be offered the chance to become a coach at Old Trafford, as he is hugely respected by his teammates and is known for his leadership skills.

Who else is out of contract at Man United this summer?

Man United have two more players out of contract at the end of June, with Victor Lindelof, 30, and Christian Eriksen, 33, also in the latter stages of their deals at Old Trafford.

Lindelof has been required of late due to Man United’s defensive issues, making 15 appearances this season, while Eriksen has represented the club on 28 occasions during the 2024-25 campaign.

However, it is widely expected that the duo will both seek pastures new when their contracts expire.
