Teenage Tottenham star Lucas Bergvall has been a standout performer in the team’s otherwise poor season.
Bergvall moved to London from Djurgården in his native Sweden last summer for a reported £8.5m and has since proven a shrewd signing. Injury issues at Tottenham Hotspur have seen Bergvall, who turned 19 in February, thrust straight into first-team football.
His consistent availability has been a godsend for Ange Postecoglou and he has now made 40 appearances, starting 21 times, in all competitions for Spurs this season. Only six players, including Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski, have appeared more.
Now, the teen could be offered a new contract that better reflects his value to Postecoglou’s side.
Spurs set to offer Lucas Bergvall new deal
Bergvall’s potential was clear when he arrived at Spurs, but it seems unlikely that he would have expected to feature so heavily in his first season. After injuries to teammates gave him the chance to prove his worth, FotbollDirekt report that a new contract for Bergvall is in the works.
FD say that his current deal would have expired in 2029 and earns him £1.72m (22m Swedish kronor) per year. Now he could be in a position to push for more, and former Spurs manager Harry Redknapp was full of praise for the youngster when he spoke to WeAreTottenhamTV.
“The big pluses this year are the two kids who have played, the boy [Archie] Gray has been fantastic and the other lad as well, Bergvall.
“I love him, he’s been excellent. Works hard, good player.”
Yves Bissouma exit could hand Bergvall starting role
Bergvall’s position could be even stronger if rumours of a fellow midfielder’s exit prove true.
GIVEMESPORT report that Yves Bissouma, who has struggled to cement a starting role at the club, will be allowed to leave in the summer with fellow Premier League club Crystal Palace among those interested in his services.
Bissouma has made 36 appearances for Spurs this season, with 14 of those coming from the bench, and scored twice. He has not played a full game in the Premier League since Spurs’ 6-3 loss to Liverpool in December.
If Spurs do let the Mali international leave, it could spell a further increased role for Bergvall as they look to rebuild from a disappointing season.
