January arrival Mathys Tel has made a good impression at Spurs despite the team’s poor performances.
The emergence of young talent tops a very short list of positives to take away from Tottenham’s season. Teenager Lucas Bergvall has broken into the squad on merit, blowing expectations out of the water.
The performances of fan-favourite Djed Spence have been a revelation, providing quality relief to the team’s injury-riddled backline.
But it’s another teenager, Mathys Tel, who has been the subject of transfer speculation this week. The Bayern Munich loanee arrived in January and has made nine appearances for Ange Postecoglou’s side.
At just 19, he is a promising attacking talent with pace and technical prowess, capable of operating across the front line. Which is why Spurs need to watch their backs in the market.
Chelsea could make summer move for Mathys Tel
Chelsea’s search for attacking reinforcements should come as no surprise. The Blues have shown under this new ownership that they are always on the lookout for opportunities in the market. Their attacking play has been underwhelming of late, despite the return of Nicholas Jackson from injury.

With the Club World Cup approaching, Maresca will be assessing the current attacking options and identifying causes for concern.
Jadon Sancho’s future is unclear at this time, Mykhailo Mudryk is suspended pending investigation for the use of banned substances, and Christopher Nkunku looks increasingly likely to be sold after failing to impress at the Bridge.
According to GiveMeSport, Chelsea are looking for a right-footed left winger and a new No.9.
Tel fits the bill as a versatile forward comfortable on the flank and through the middle. Should Spurs elect not to exercise their £45m buy option, he could be a solid option for the West London side.
Tottenham ‘very happy’ with Tel loan
By all accounts, Spurs are satisfied with Tel so far. The 19-year-old was in the news following a video which surfaced on X, showing him talking to disgruntled Spurs fans after a disappointing loss to Fulham last month. Fans were impressed with the maturity shown by the Frenchman.
Postecoglou and co. are reportedly ‘very happy’ with what they have seen so far.
Talking to GiveMeSport, Fabrizio Romano said: “For Mathys Tel, they’re very happy with the boy, with the attitude, with the potential they see in this boy, and that’s why they were fighting for weeks to sign him in January.”
There’s no doubting Tel’s ability. He has shown flashes of quality in his time at Bayern, racking up 16 goal involvements for the German giants last season. It remains to be seen how well he adjusts to English football, but the early signs are positive.
Spurs should look to hold onto him come the end of the season, but should they choose not to, there will be no shortage of suitors for the youngster with Chelsea sure to be near the top of the list.
