Report: Arsenal readying a bid for £85m striker who is keen to join Mikel Arteta’s side

4 Min Read

Andrea Berta has arrived as Arsenal’s new sporting director primarily with the remit of overseeing a big summer transfer window.

Arsenal want to buy a striker, a new superstar winger and there’s also the small job of rebuilding Mikel Arteta’s midfield if both Thomas Partey and Jorginho leave.

Barcelona want Partey according to reports and Arsenal currently seem no closer to handing the 31-year-old a new deal.

Of course, the signing of a new striker is captivating the minds of most Arsenal fans first and foremost when it comes to the summer ahead.

And by a lot of accounts, Arsenal might end up buying Sporting CP goalscoring extraordinaire Viktor Gyokeres.

Arsenal are preparing a bid for Viktor Gyokeres

Arsenal want Gyokeres and the striker has seemingly decided that he would be keen on a move to north London as well.

That considered, Portuguese outlet A Bola are now reporting that Arsenal are the ‘most serious’ candidates for Gyokeres.

In addition, the well-placed source claims that Arsenal are preparing a bid for Gyokeres ‘by the end of the season’.

After making the switch from Coventry City to Sporting CP back in 2023, Gyokeres has an incredible record of 87 goals in 94 games for the club.

And in terms of this season itself, the Sweden international has scored 44 in 44, including a hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League.

Alexander Isak is still Arsenal’s first choice by most accounts, but the Newcastle United striker might prove impossible to sign this summer.

And therefore Gyokeres could be an excellent alternative.

Is Viktor Gyokeres ready for the Premier League?

Of course, some Arsenal fans might be worried about Gyokeres making the step up from Portuguese football, a striker with an £85m release clause.

And therefore it is relevant to look at some high profile strikers who have made the switch from Liga Portugal in the past.

Joao Felix, Darwin Nunez and Goncalo Ramos have all been sold to top European clubs for big money in recent years, three strikers who have enjoyed mixed success since.

However, Gyokeres is different in that he’s already got a long history for playing in England with all of Coventry, Brighton & Hove Albion and Swansea City.

Gyokeres is tried and tested and would make a remarkable signing for Berta in his first summer at the club.

And the Gunners may not stop there, Berta has also held a meeting with Nico Williams’ camp recently, one that reached an exciting conclusion from an Arsenal point of view.
