With Liverpool cruising towards the Premier League title, developments are starting to happen at Anfield.
Arne Slot can begin to prepare for the summer transfer window as the 2024/25 campaign draws to an end, and before new signings even enter the conversation, Liverpool have some contract sagas to solve.
As has been well documented, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold all see their deals expire in June as things stand, with none of the trio signing extensions as of yet.
However, only the latter seems likely to leave Anfield, which reinforces a theory proposed by Robbie Fowler back in January.
What Robbie Fowler theorised about the contract situation at Liverpool
To give you the latest from Anfield, Alexander-Arnold is expected to join Real Madrid when his contract expires this summer.
However, TBR Football understand Liverpool feel they are close to agreements with Salah and Van Dijk – which supports what Fowler said in January.
Speaking to Ben Foster for Amazon Prime at the beginning of 2025, the man who scored 183 goals in 369 appearances for Liverpool suggested the Reds were deliberately keeping a lid on the fact two of the three had signed new contracts, in order not to put public pressure on the other.
Fowler said: “I do have a little theory actually. I just think two of them have signed already you know, for some reason, and maybe one hasn’t, but the club can’t come out and say you two have signed because it makes the other one look worse.
“I think there’s a possibility that may have happened, because I think if two of them sign and then they come out and say, oh we’ve signed, it puts so much pressure on the other one.”
Therefore, Liverpool may have deliberately waited until the end of the season neared before releasing this news to the public, to ensure Alexander-Arnold could focus on his football.
Liverpool have already started work on signing a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold
TBR Football understand Liverpool have already done some groundwork on Jeremie Frimpong of Bayer Leverkusen as a replacement for Alexander-Arnold.
The Netherlands international – who can boast four goals and 11 assists in 43 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen this season – is expected to cost around £35m.
Apparently, Frimpong has already agreed to join Liverpool – so this is a deal we can certainly see happening this summer.
