Aston Villa suffered a 3-1 defeat away at Paris Saint Germain in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie last night.
The Villains shocked the Parc De Princes, taking the lead in the 35th minute, thoroughly against the run of play through Morgan Rogers.
However, that lead didn’t last long as Desire Doue equalised just four minutes later, curling home a stunning effort which left PSG enemy Emiliano Martinez rooted to the spot.
PSG then took the lead just after halftime with an equally brilliant ferocious effort from winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Left-back Nuno Mendes extended their lead in the 92nd minute, making the task even tougher for Aston Villa as they meet for the second leg next week.
Frank Leboeuf says Aston could be in trouble
While reacting to PSG’s dominant win, former French defender Frank Leboeuf has claimed that Aston Villa could be in even more danger next week as they welcome the Ligue 1 side to Villa Park.
Speaking on ESPN, he said: “It was clear for me that even losing 1-0 or 2-1 was perfect for them (Aston Villa.)
“But for me, they’re going to be in more danger at home because they’re going to open up and with players like Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Barcola, that’s going to be terrible for them because there’s going to be space for them and they’re going to be punished.”
Former Arsenal target Doue was a standout player on the night and Leboeuf was quick to sing the praises of the French attacker.
“He was already showing some interesting stuff when he was at Rennes but for the past four or five months, that’s a different player.
“I was listening when you spoke about Lamine Yamal, that’s the same feeling I have with Doue, he has maturity, no fear whatsoever, wants to be there and wants to enjoy it, he tries crazy skills because he’s so confident in his own capabilities.
“The sky is the limit for him,” Lebeouf said.
Morgan Rogers’ defiant comeback claim
Despite Lebeouf’s warning, Villa goalscorer Rogers believes the tie is far from over and insists his teammates are still confident to get a result.
He said: “There’s loads of belief in the changing room. We have nothing to lose, nobody thought we’d win the tie in the first place. Why not just go for it? We’ve definitely got the quality to turn things around. It’s not done yet.
With the Villa Park crowd behind them, Unai Emery’s side will fancy their chances even if a comeback seems unlikely to some.
