Tottenham suffer new injury concern before Frankfurt clash as attacker ‘sent for scans’ on hamstring issue

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly been handed a new injury concern ahead of their Europa League quarter-final first leg with Eintracht Frankfurt, as Wilson Odobert has been sent for scans on a potential hamstring problem.

The former Burnley attacker should have been anticipating another successful evening in Europe’s secondary competition after inspiring his side to a phenomenal comeback victory over AZ Alkmaar in the last 16.

Odobert was on target twice in the 3-1 second-leg win as Spurs overturned a 1-0 deficit from their opening encounter, and he has also played a part in each of Tottenham’s last seven Premier League games.

The 20-year-old came off the bench in the weekend’s 3-1 victory over Southampton, and there was no indication of a fresh issue in Wednesday’s training session, nor did Ange Postecoglou mention a problem in his pre-game press conference.

However, journalist Paul O Keefe claims that Odobert has now reported tightness in his hamstring, and the Frenchman has been sent for scans to determine how serious his issue is.

As a result, Odobert is set to sit out the visit of Frankfurt on Thursday evening, and his availability for the visit of Wolverhampton Wanderers on April 13 and second leg with the German giants on April 17 is also clouded in uncertainty.

Several Tottenham players have had no luck with injuries this season, but Odobert is arguably the most unfortunate of the lot, having been restricted to just 15 appearances since making the move from Burnley last summer.

The youngster suffered his first injury against Coventry City in the EFL Cup in mid-September, although he briefly returned a month later, coming off the bench in the Europa League league-phase win over AZ.

However, a complication then forced Odobert to go under the knife to correct the injury to his right hamstring, and the France Under-21 international was out for three full months before finally being cleared to return.

It is not known whether Odobert’s latest problem is on the same hamstring, but O Keefe has stressed that it is not certain that he has even suffered a proper injury, and tightness could theoretically settle down in a few days.

On the other hand, a grade one injury would likely require a layoff of at least two weeks, meaning that Odobert could miss both legs of the Frankfurt quarter-final as well as Premier League meetings with Wolves, Nottingham Forest (April 21) and potentially Liverpool (April 27).

Postecoglou is already without Dejan Kulusevski (foot), Radu Dragusin (ACL) and Kevin Danso (hamstring) at present, and he could also suffer a double suspension blow in Thursday’s first leg with Frankfurt.
