Shake off that heartbreak and get back in the game

Match details:

Location: Allianz Arena, Munich, Germany

Kickoff: 6:30 PM Local time | 12:30 PM EDT | 9:30 AM PDT

Bayern Munich will need to stop brooding on what happened in the Champions League and shift their focus to Der Klassiker which might as well be called “L” Clasico because both teams went home empty handed in Europe. The return leg of the UCL Quarterfinals follow this fixture, so it really is make or break.

Team news

Manuel Neuer and Alphonso Davies are still unavailable for selection, while Dayot Upamecano is slowly working his way back. Apart from that, no major absences are expected so the starting lineup should look like this:

This lineup gives Bayern the best chance of winning and if it all goes well, this team might carry over into the second leg away to Inter Milan. Jonas Urbig starts in goal, with Josip Stanišić, Kim Min-jae, Eric Dier (Bayern doesn’t have a lot of options), and Joshua Kimmich round up the defence. Aleksandar Pavlović is expected to be back so let’s put him in beside João Palhinha in the pivot. Meanwhile, in attack, Leroy Sané, Thomas Müller, and Michael Olise support Harry Kane.

Vincent Kompany will have to work around the numerous injuries on the squad, but Niko Kovač is dealing with some things at BVB as well. We will dive deep into that and more during the Bavarian Podcast Works — Preview Show. Here is what we have on tap:

  • A look at where each team sits in the Bundesliga table and a review of how they performed in the Champions League (Hint: Not good).
  • A look at the injury and suspension situations for both teams.
  • A guess at Bayern Munich’s starting XI, which is a tough ask given all of the injuries.
  • A prediction on the match.
