Andre Onana was a big topic of discussion after Man United’s Europa League contest with Lyon on Thursday night.
The Cameroonian has not had the best of times since moving to Old Trafford during the summer of 2023 and has often been criticised by former Man United stars throughout the two seasons he has experienced in Manchester.
Onana has made more errors than every Premier League goalkeeper when it comes to mistakes that led to goals and the 29-year-old was at the heart of Man United conceding twice on Thursday against Lyon.
The former Inter star watched Thiago Almada’s free-kick sail past him in the first half before spilling the ball into Rayan Cherki’s path for Lyon’s injury-time equaliser.
This led to Man United legend Paul Scholes having to be critical of the goalkeeper and the former midfielder had a lot to say.
What Paul Scholes said about Man United’s Andre Onana
The Man United goalkeeper was a topic of discussion before a ball was kicked in France after Nemanja Matic heavily criticised Onana, with the former Red Devils midfielder stating that the Cameroonian was “one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history”.
That seemed to weigh heavily on the 29-year-old’s mind, which may have contributed to his errors, and having responded to the Lyon star’s criticism, Scholes believes he should have kept his mouth shut.
“He’s probably wishing he kept his mouth shut before the game. It’s a really bad mistake,” Scholes said on TNT Sports regarding Onana’s first-half error.
“It’s a decent ball in, we initially thought it could have been offside, but obviously Leny Yoro is the one who plays him on.
“But from then on, the keeper, I’m not sure what he was trying to do. He obviously tries to clear it but the ball bounces right in front of him. It’s an awful mistake from him.”
Following the full-time whistle, Scholes continued to discuss Onana and stated on TNT Sports that Man United need to think about selling the Cameroonian star this summer.
“Yeah, I think it’s something they need to think about,” the pundit said via The Mirror. “But they need to look at the budget as well. Can you get away with not spending that money on a goalkeeper?
“He hasn’t been quite good enough but it will come down to money and what Amorim has got to spend. We’ve seen this goalkeeper do well at Inter Milan as well. But I don’t think his distribution has been great either, and that’s one of the reasons he was brought in.
“But can you almost get away with not spending another £40m on a goalkeeper? I don’t know. Ruben Amorim has a lot of problems to solve.”
Man United will have home advantage next week in the second leg and it could prove to be the difference between both sides as Lyon showed that they were not scared of the Premier League outfit.
Lyon are not scared of Man United says Rayan Cherki
Having scored the equaliser in Lyon’s Europa League contest with Man United, Cherki stated after the match that the Ligue 1 side were not scared of the current Red Devils side, labelling them defensive-minded.
Speaking in the mixed zone post-match, the French talent said via GFNF: “We were way better than this [Manchester United] team.
“They are a good team but we were never scared of them and we never will be scared of them. We will go there (to Old Trafford) to win, to attack, not to defend as they did here.”
Lyon have been in great form of late and will have gained a lot of confidence from Cherki’s late goal in the 2-2 draw. Man United will have a tough task on their hands and Ruben Amorim cannot afford to see any more errors from Onana in the second leg.
