TBR Football can exclusively confirm what Liverpool sources are now saying about the club’s interest in Newcastle United star Alexander Isak now Mohamed Salah has penned a new contract.
Friday was a joyous day for Liverpool fans as the club confirmed that Salah had extended his stay at Anfield for at least two more years.
Liverpool have also been interested in Isak for a number of months now. Indeed, Liverpool contacted Isak’s representatives after he scored against them in the Carabao Cup final.
Since then, Salah has extended his stay at Liverpool, and club sources have told TBR Football where they now stand in terms of interest in Isak.
Liverpool sources think new Mohamed Salah stay can help persuade Alexander Isak to join Reds
TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey has revealed that Liverpool are still fully intent in getting a deal for Isak over the line.
Indeed, Liverpool’s best-case scenario plan all along was – and continues to be – Salah staying at Anfield and Isak also joining.
Not only that, but TBR Football understands that Salah’s contract extension could actually inspire Isak to join the Reds.
Liverpool’s success in retaining Salah – with Virgil van Dijk set to also stay – shows the Anfield side’s intent to keep challenging for trophies.
What Newcastle are planning to do to try and keep Alexander Isak
Bailey previously confirmed that Newcastle now have a renewed plan to keep Isak at St James’ Park, namely by breaking their wage structure.
Newcastle firmly believe that Isak is one of the world’s top strikers, but sources acknowledge that, as it stands, he is paid way below market value – he is not one of the club’s top earners.
The club’s current top earner is Bruno Guimaraes, who is understood to be earning in excess of £150k-a-week, and Newcastle are going to have to go way above that mark to keep Isak.
Key to any decision will be Newcastle’s ability to claim one of the Champions League spots this season.
And with qualification spots for the Premier League’s top five now confirmed, their chances have improved.
However, Liverpool will fancy their chances of signing Isak nonetheless.
