Thursday night was a tough one in the career of Man United’s Andre Onana.
The Cameroon goalkeeper was viewed as one of the best goalkeepers in the world before arriving at Man United from Inter Milan during the summer of 2023, however, the 29-year-old has experienced some very difficult moments across the 94 games he has played for the Red Devils.
Poor performances have seen former Man United stars criticise Onana and they have been justified, although the goalkeeper has also put in some dazzling displays for the Manchester club.
Ahead of Man United’s match with Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday, Nemanja Matic heavily criticised Andre Onana, with the former Red Devils midfielder stating that the Cameroonian was “one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history”.
That put pressure on Onana to respond against Lyon and what followed was a very difficult night for the goalkeeper as the 29-year-old made two big errors.

Man United’s Andre Onana tops errors chart
During their FA Cup final win over Man City last season, Onana was one of the stars for Man United and it is these displays fans of the Red Devils want to see more of.
However, the goalkeeper continues to make mistakes at Old Trafford, and after watching Thiago Almada’s free-kick sail past him, no Premier League goalkeeper has made more errors leading to a shot (12) or more errors leading to a goal (8) across all competitions since the start of last season than Onana.
Many fans will also put Rayan Cherki’s equaliser in the 2-2 draw down as an Onana mistake, although that would be harsh given how close the shot before came at the Man United star from.
Despite these errors, Ruben Amorim is still standing by his goalkeeper, admitting after the Lyon contest that he is “really confident” the 29-year-old will get things right.
Ruben Amorim stands by Andre Onana
Amorim will know that if he can get confidence back into Onana that Man United will have a top goalkeeper on their hands; however, the pressure of playing for the Manchester giants continues to weigh heavily on the former Inter Milan star.
The Portuguese coach wants to keep Onana on side and he showed his support to the Cameroon star after his forgettable Lyon display.
“When one player makes a mistake, all the team makes a mistake, so we continue like this,” Amorim told TNT Sports after the full-time whistle.
The Man United boss would later go on to say about Onana via the BBC: “If you look at the season, I’ve made more mistakes than them during these last games and during these last months.
“There’s nothing I can say to Andre in this moment that will help him, so the most important thing is to be natural and then when the time comes, I will choose the best XI to play. But I’m really confident in Andre.”
It remains to be seen how Onana responds to a disastrous night for the goalkeeper in France. The 29-year-old has shown before that he is a top goalkeeper, but the Man United shirt is something different.
