He also finds enough humor in the situation to make the “Gomez back up striker” joke. Kudos for that.
How different things can look within a few weeks. Or even just two. It was that short period of time ago that the former Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director looked to be in a comfortable position at current job as board member for sport at Bayern Munich. There were some detractors of his work at Bayern but also fans and his work was hardly poor enough to see him thrown out just after his first anniversary at the club.
Or was it?
Rather stunningly, it was rather extensively reported that Bayern’s supervisory board were extremely critical of the German’s work and that Eberl’s time at Bayern seemed ‘dire’. With such reports naturally came rumors of replacements, one of which being Rasenballsport Leipzig’s technical director, Mario Gomez. The former striker of course has an extensive history with Bayern Munich and has been in the job with The Cans for around 3 years now.
Rumors of being replaced are of course ugly for any current employee and the same went for Eberl when he read the rumors, though he managed to see some humor in it: “When I first read the links I thought it was about a Harry Kane back-up [laughs] but then I realized it was about me,” Eberl said in a recent interview with the Sport1-Doppelpass, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “Of course it’s not nice, but I’m doing my job with everything I can and make decisions I and the club are convinced of. I can’t influence what’s being said and written on the outside.”
Uli Hoeneß has been a big fan of Eberl for many years and was even heavily considered for the role before Hasan Salihamidžić was brought in. To see him thrown out after just a year after all that would be rather odd.
Also… who else thought the Gomez rumors were at first about a back up striker? Was it just me and Eberl or did anybody else do so too?
