Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City have all taken it in turns to dominate the upper echelons of the Premier League over the past seven or so years.
Since 2018, the Premier League title has gone to either Manchester City or Liverpool, and it looks as though that will be the case this season too.
However, Arsenal have risen up in recent years and have competed for the title over the past three seasons in a row.
Now, Paul Merson has spoken of something Liverpool have done which is “unbelievable” for them and “certainly bad news” for Arsenal and City.
Paul Merson says Liverpool’s star player contract renewals are bad news for Arsenal and Manchester City
Just a few weeks ago, Merson was aghast at how Liverpool had allowed the contracts of three of their best players to get near the end.
Although the Reds had sought to renew all three, there was an initial blow for them as Trent Alexander-Arnold opted for a future move to Real Madrid instead.
However, Mohamed Salah has now extended his contract at Liverpool, while Virgil van Dijk is set to follow suit, according to TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey.
And Merson, writing on Sportskeeda, praised the “unbelievable news” in getting Salah and Van Dijk to extend their Liverpool stays.
“Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk renewing their contracts is unbelievable news for Liverpool!”, wrote Merson. It’s certainly bad news for Arsenal, Man City and the others though.
“If you had to lose one of them three players, it would have to be Trent Alexander-Arnold.
“I don’t mean that badly, he’s the best passer in the country but Salah and Van Dijk are just more important.
“Fair play to both of them as well. They could’ve easily taken the easy way out by accepting a big pay cheque to go to another league in the latter stages of their career.
“But they have decided to stay at Liverpool and compete, which is commendable.”
What Mohamed Salah contract renewal means for Liverpool’s Alexander Isak pursuit
Liverpool have been after Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak for a while, and had Salah gone, it would have made perfect sense to replace a world-class star with another.
Now Salah has committed his future to Liverpool, questions may be asked over whether the Reds will continue to pursue Isak.
However, TBR Football sources have revealed that Liverpool are still eager to get a deal for Isak over the line.
Indeed, Liverpool’s best-case scenario plan all along was – and continues to be – Salah staying at Anfield and Isak also joining.
Furthermore, TBR Football sources understand that the feeling at Liverpool is that Salah’s new contract could actually inspire Isak to join the Reds.
