Alan Shearer has acknowledged that Mohamed Salah has the potential to surpass his Premier League goal-scoring record after the Liverpool star confirmed a contract extension. The Newcastle United icon remains the league’s all-time top scorer with an impressive 260 goals.
Salah’s current tally stands at 184, leaving him 76 shy of equaling Shearer’s mark—a challenging feat but one that seems possible if he extends his stay beyond the new two-year agreement.
With 32 goals across all competitions this season, 27 in the Premier League alone, Salah would be optimistic about edging closer to one of English football’s most prestigious individual records should next season replicate this prolific form.
Harry Kane had previously been tipped to dethrone Shearer after amassing 213 goals before departing Tottenham for Bayern Munich in 2023. However, now that pundit and Match of the Day stalwart believes Salah too might seize the title.
In conversation with Betfair, Shearer said: “I don’t suspect that my Premier League goalscoring record is on Mo Salah’s mind, but the record is going to go one day. Whoever it goes to, whether it’s Harry Kane, Mo Salah or Erling Haaland, I guess there’s so many ifs and buts. It will go one day and it might be Salah who does it, yeah.”
Amid growing speculation, Virgil van Dijk could be next to pen a fresh deal as his current contract nears its conclusion. Shearer believes both are set to continue being indispensable for Liverpool in the coming years.
“They wouldn’t have been given the contracts if there was any doubt whatsoever, they both look in great condition. They’re both incredibly fit and have proven that this season, so they’ll go again. Salah will get his usual shed-load of goals and Van Dijk will be as solid as ever.”
“Of course I’m very excited,” Salah expressed to the club’s media team after signing a new contract. “We have a great team now. Before also we had a great team. But I signed because I think we have a chance to win other trophies and enjoy my football.
“It’s great, I had my best years here. I played eight years, hopefully it’s going to be 10. Enjoying my life here, enjoying my football. I had the best years in my career.
“I would like to say to [the fans], I am very, very happy to be here. I signed here because I believe we can win a lot of big trophies together. Keep supporting us and we’ll give it our best, and hopefully in the future we’re going to win more trophies.”
