Newcastle manager Eddie Howe will miss Sunday’s clash with Manchester United after being admitted to hospital.

The Magpies boss has been absent from training in recent days due to illness.

Newcastle have confirmed Howe is conscious and talking to relatives while he undergoes medical tests.

Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones will lead the first team for the Premier League clash against the Red Devils.

A club statement read: “[Howe] was admitted to hospital late on Friday evening having felt unwell for a number of days.

“Medical staff kept Eddie in hospital overnight for further tests, which are ongoing.

“He is conscious and talking with his family, and is continuing to receive expert medical care.

“Everyone at Newcastle United extends their best wishes to Eddie for a speedy recovery, and further updates will follow in due course.”

Assistant manager Tindall conducted media duties for Newcastle on Friday and said he expected Howe to recover before Sunday, before the situation took a turn.

Tindall said: “He’s been really ill and has been in bed the last few days. We hope he will be OK for Sunday.

“We’ve been in daily contact. We’ve been speaking three or four times a day so it’s not affected any of the preparations.

“It’s not very often that Eddie is not able to come to work. It is a bit different, and it has only been a couple of days.

“But we have a fantastic bunch of lads and they know what they have to deliver.”

Howe recently claimed his place in Newcastle folklore by guiding them to a first major trophy in 70 years.

The Magpies beat Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final in March, sparking wild scenes on Tyneside including a city-wide trophy parade.

Champions League qualification is also in their hands after a run of three consecutive Premier League wins.

Fifth-place guarantees a place in Europe’s top-tier competition – and Newcastle are one point of fifth-place Aston Villa with a game in hand.

Chelsea are level on points with the Magpies, although the Blues have played one game more.
