Liverpool gave itself a huge boost this week by confirming that Mohamed Salah had been tied down for another two years, ending the speculation over his future that has been rumbling on in the background all season.
The Egyptian has scored 32 goals and laid on 22 assists so far in 2024/25 and losing such a big part of the Reds’ attack would have been a huge blow. But Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes has now ticked off one major task from his lengthy to-do list.
Virgil van Dijk, the Liverpool captain, is expected to follow Salah is penning new terms. Trent Alexander-Arnold, meanwhile, is thought to be edging closer to joining Real Madrid on a free transfer. Two signing and one leaving always felt like a likely outcome.
But what does Liverpool need to do next? In terms of contracts, Ibrahima Konate is soon going to become a big priority with talks already underway with the French center-back.
Konate will only have a year left on his deal when this season expires. Now a key part of the starting XI and having not yet penned fresh terms since he arrived from RB Leipzig, the 25-year-old should be next in line to find an agreement with.
Also with contracts that expire in 2026 are Caoimhin Kelleher and Andy Robertson. The former is likely to move on this summer having made it clear that he wants to be a number one, however, while the latter’s form has dropped off. A left-back upgrade could be signed this summer.

In 2027, aside from Salah, there is a long list of players whose deals run until then: Luis Diaz, Curtis Jones, Diogo Jota, Harvey Elliott, Alisson Becker, Joe Gomez, Conor Bradley, Kostas Tsimikas and Wataru Endo. Liverpool will have decisions to make on each of those players, beginning in the next year or so if they haven’t already.
With Salah sorted out, Liverpool has got rid of one big worry — at least for a year or so. But there is plenty more besides that for the Reds to be getting on with in the next few months even before they think about what should be a big summer transfer window.
Liverpool.com says: Konate has to be the next one to sort out, assuming that everything is already being done to convince Alexander-Arnold. In the future, Liverpool will hope not to let key men get so close to the end of their deals, but with upheaval behind the scenes with a succession of sporting directors at the helm, the circumstances are unlikely to unfold in that way again.
