Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has been hospitalized and will miss his team’s Premier League match against Manchester United on Sunday. The Magpies stated that Howe has been feeling unwell for several days and has undergone tests in hospital.
According to the club, Howe is conscious and has been in communication with his family. In a statement, the club said: “Eddie Howe will miss Newcastle United’s Premier League game against Manchester United on Sunday due to illness.
“Eddie was admitted to hospital late on Friday evening after feeling unwell for several days. Medical staff kept him in hospital overnight for further tests, which are ongoing. He is conscious and talking with his family, and is continuing to receive expert medical care.
“Everyone at Newcastle United extends their best wishes to Eddie for a speedy recovery, and further updates will follow in due course. Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones will lead the team at St. James’ Park on Sunday, supported by the club’s first team staff.”
Howe was absent from his pre-match press conference on Friday, and his long-time assistant Tindall revealed that the 47 year old had been struggling with illness. However, Tindall had expected Howe to recover in time for the match, reports the Mirror.
“He’s been really poorly the last couple of days in bed,” said Tindall. “We’ve been in daily contact. We’ve been speaking three or four times a day so it’s not affected any of the preparations. We’ve still got a couple of days and I’m sure he’ll be fine for the weekend.”

Howe missed his first match in charge of Newcastle in 2021 while suffering from Covid. The ex-Bournemouth boss is a hero on Tyneside after he guided Newcastle to a first major domestic trophy in 70 years when it beat Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
Newcastle will go into the game against Manchester United in seventh place in the table, seeking a win that will strengthen its chances of Champions League qualification.
The Magpies’ cause was helped somewhat on Saturday as Everton secured an impressive win over Nottingham Forest, thanks to a late winner from Abdoulaye Doucoure. But there were wins for two of the chasing pack.
Manchester City came from behind to thrash Crystal Palace while Aston Villa beat Southampton 3-0, with Ollie Watkin, Donyell Malen and John McGinn scoring from the bench.
