Andre Onana rested for Manchester United game at Newcastle

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana will not feature in Sunday’s Premier League match at Newcastle United.

Onana has played every minute of United’s 69 Premier League matches since joining from Inter in the summer of 2023, but will be rested by head coach Ruben Amorim for the trip to St. James’ Park.

The 29-year-old was at fault for both of Lyon’s goals in Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final first leg in France, which United drew 2-2.

Onana allowed Thiago Almada’s 25th-minute free-kick to go straight in while Rayan Cherki’s equaliser deep into stoppage time at the end of the game came after the goalkeeper palmed Corentin Tolisso’s effort back into his path.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper had inadvertently sparked a war of words with former United midfielder Nemanja Matic, now at Lyon, ahead of the tie after Onana said the Premier League side were “way better” than the French team.

That led Matic to say that Onana was “one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history” in his pre-match press conference.

While Altay Bayindir — United’s back-up goalkeeper — is set to be handed his Premier League debut for the trip to Newcastle, Onana is likely to return to selection for Thursday’s return leg against Lyon at Old Trafford.

United are 13th in the Premier League standings ahead of Sunday’s trip to Newcastle, who are seventh in the table and just four points behind fourth-place Manchester City, who have played two games more.
