Carles Puyol’s birthday: How many of Spain’s 100-cap players can you name?

Carles Puyol will forever be remembered as one of the best centre-backs of all time.

The warrior, who has turned 47 today, came through the youth system at Barcelona, progressing from the academy to Barcelona C, Barcelona B and then the first team, with his senior debut for the Catalan team coming in 1999.

Puyol would go on to represent Barcelona on 593 occasions, winning six La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey crowns, four Spanish Super Cups, three Champions League titles, one UEFA Super Cup and two Club World Cups during an excellent career.

The centre-back also represented Spain between 2000 and 2013, helping the national team to win the World Cup in 2010 and European Championship in 2008.

Known for his defensive qualities but also for his immense leadership, Puyol was a cornerstone of the great Barcelona and Spain teams which have enjoyed so much success and will be remembered throughout the history of football.
