Jamie Redknapp believes that Liverpool could cash in on Mohamed Salah next season, if the Egyptian international had a drop in form.

Salah has committed his future to Liverpool, signing a new deal that will keep him at Anfield until 2027. The 32-year-old had been set to become a free agent at the end of the current season, with his future — along with those of Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold — surrounded by uncertainty.

Salah had been heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, particularly after Al-Ittihad submitted a $188m (£150m/€181m) bid in 2023. Paris Saint-Germain also emerged as a potential destination earlier this season. However, with this new contract in place, Salah has brought an end to speculation over a possible departure — at least for the foreseeable future.

Having joined the Reds in 2017, Salah is now set to complete a full decade at the club if he sees out the deal. However former Reds midfielder Redknapp has given a scenario in which the Reds could cash in on the Egyptian king.

Reacting to the news, the Sky Sports pundit said: “I think it was a really good week for Liverpool and all the fans. I wasn’t quite so sure with Mohamed Salah whether he would stay, I had the feeling Virgil will, not for any other reason, I just thought that might be the one.

“But I think to get him to sign for another two years, and I was a bit, I wasn’t quite sure how this would play out. I felt last year he might even be leaving. But the fact is now you have to just, if you do the math, where you’re going to give him, say, £50 million ($65M), that’s £500,000 ($655,000) a week.”

The 51-year-old added: “Of course, it’s an extortionate amount of money. But you then want to go and buy a player for 50 million ($65M) and then you’ve got to go and give him 500 grand a week, that’s £100 million ($130M). Are you going to find anybody in world football that can give you those numbers, deliver those numbers, goals assists in the next two years? Probably not, so for that reason, it makes total sense.

“If for some reason you were to see a drop-off, which I don’t feel you will next season, there’s always a whirlwind at the end of the season. If he wanted to go maybe to another league or just try something different, you could still get £50 million for him. Now, my guess is it might even be more than that, because of the numbers that we’re talking about, and he was in such a great position, because his contract’s up.

“But it’s great news for not just Liverpool, I think it’s great news for the Premier League. He is one of the greats of the Premier League, he’s certainly one of the great players at Liverpool, which is obviously subjective. Everyone has different players that they love and like and who they have on the back of their shirt. But he is certainly a Liverpool great.”
