Man United’s other goalkeeping options as both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir struggle to impress

Ruben Amorim dropped Andre Onana in place of Altay Bayindir as Manchester United took on Newcastle on Sunday – but the decision arguably caused even more of a headache.

The Cameroon international was at fault for both goals on Thursday as Lyon salvaged a 2-2 draw in the UEFA Europa League quarter-final, with his errors coming across all the more worse after he mocked Nemanja Matic in the buildup to the game.

As a result, the man from Lisbon saw fit to give the Manchester United No.24 the weekend off – not even naming him on the bench – and hand the Turkey international his Premier League debut.

However, it was a nightmarish afternoon for Altay Bayindir on Tyneside, conceding four goals while being directly at fault for the final strike, throwing the ball straight to Joelinton who assisted Bruno Guimaraes.

With both Andre Onana and the Turk struggling, let’s take a look at who else Ruben Amorim could call upon in between the sticks.

Which other goalkeepers exist at Manchester United?

There are actually a fair few glovesmen in the Manchester United squad.

Tom Heaton is a name many will be aware of, having emerged from the club’s academy in 2005 and staying at Old Trafford until 2010, before returning in 2021 – the man from Chester also boasts three England caps.

However, the rest are relatively unknown quantities at the highest level.

  • Andre Onana
  • Altay Bayindir
  • Tom Heaton
  • Dermot Mee
  • Elyh Harrison
  • William Murdock
  • Hubert Graczyk

Sadly, there is no standout option to emerge from the shadows.

In regards to Mee, the 22-year-old has never made a senior appearance for Manchester United, and his record on paper for the U21 side does not make good reading.

After impressing for the U18 side with six clean sheets in ten appearances, the Northern Ireland U21 international has kept just three clean sheets in 20 appearances for the U21s, conceding 44 goals.

With Harrison – who is only 19 – the England U20 international has also never appeared for the senior side, making 27 appearances for the U18s before being promoted to the U21 ranks, where he boasts 22 appearances.

The teenager has conceded 40 goals for each side, keeping a total of nine clean sheets.

Murdock is also yet to appear for Manchester United – who want Liam Delap – at senior level.

The 17-year-old has, however, impressed enough to appear for the U21 side on three occasions, far above his own age rank, conceding four goals without keeping a clean sheet.

Murdock kept eight clean sheets in 17 games for the Manchester United U18 side, a decent record.

Last but not least, Graczyk – who is also 22, like Mee.

The Polish glovesman arrived from Arsenal last summer, but has shipped 11 goals in just three appearances for the U21 side at Old Trafford.

Therefore, Amorim will just have to keep faith with Onana – who is wanted by Saudi Arabian clubs – and Bayindir, with the options behind those two far from convincing.
