Manchester United‘s worst ever-season in the Premier League in terms of a points return has been confirmed following Sunday’s 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

The Red Devils only picked up 58 points from their 38 league games in 2021-22, and that has been their all-time low for a Premier League campaign in terms of points, but the record will be broken this term.

Ruben Amorim’s side suffered a 4-1 loss to Newcastle on Sunday afternoon, with Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes (two) and Bruno Guimaraes are on the scoresheet for the Magpies, who have risen into third spot in the Premier League table.

The defeat has left Man United with 38 points from 32 matches, meaning that they can only reach a maximum of 56 points in the latter stages of the season, which will occur if the team are victorious in their final six games.

Either way, this will go down as the team’s worst-ever season in the Premier League when taking into account points.

Man United can now only reach 56 points in the Premier League

Man United are down in 14th spot in the table, only three points above 17th-placed West Ham United, with the 20-time English champions having a disastrous domestic campaign.

However, the Red Devils can still secure Champions League football for next season via the Europa League.

Amorim’s team are level at 2-2 with Lyon ahead of the second leg of their quarter-final, with the two teams set to lock horns at Old Trafford on Thursday evening for a spot in the final four of the tournament.

Keane brands Man United ‘weak physically and mentally’

Ex-Man United captain Roy Keane called his former side ‘weak physically and mentally’ following the heavy loss at St James’ Park.

“We keep making excuses for this Man United team. There aren’t enough players that can run in this team, I think there are players that don’t want to run,” Keane told Sky Sports News.

“Newcastle were outstanding. I think United now are physically and mentally a weak team. Newcastle were too fast, too powerful, they were more determined and they got what they deserved.

“Well done Newcastle, they were outstanding but United, there was talk before the game that things were getting better for this United team but I can’t see it. I worry for this group of players. To me, they do not look like a strong group mentally.”

Man United will face Wolverhampton Wanderers, Bournemouth, Brentford, West Ham United, Chelsea and Aston Villa in their final six league matches of the campaign, while they could also have four more matches in the Europa League before the end of the season.
