Thomas Müller tired of discussions on him not starting for Bayern Munich after draw against Borussia Dortmund

Does age really matter when the player is still far superior to any competing players who may come in?

It’s official — Thomas Müller is playing his last few games at Bayern Munich, before he leaves the club this summer, and he just played his last der Klassiker in Bavarian red.

It is not very often that the Raumdeuter starts, but a phenomenal performance at Der Klassiker now has everyone questioning things. This is clearly a man who deserves to feature the starting XI game in and game out despite his age, so what’s the deal?

When asked about the same, Müller had a few points to add to this, per Kerry Hau via @iMiaSanMia.

The German legend acknowledges that, despite his age, he still continues to be a threat in and around the box, as he has always been.

“But we mustn’t forget that we’re here at FC Bayern, at the absolute top of European football. The competition is incredibly tough. When I look at our attack, we only have quality. That’s why I think the discussion is a bit tiresome,” he added.

BFW Commentary

While Müller here states that he believes he’s been benched by (other players of) quality, one might beg to differ. A player of his caliber, let alone his particular skill set cannot be benched for a whole year, only to start games now just because of the injury crisis or because the best public image decision would be to start him regularly before he leaves in summer.

While Jamal Musiala is a terrific player in the same position, he simply does not offer what Müller does.

Former Bayern frontman Robert Lewandowski is as old as him, and yet continues to start games left, right, and centre for FC Barcelona. Does age really matter when the player is still far superior to any competing players who may come in?
