Onana made two high-profile errors in Manchester United’s 2-2 Europa League quarter-final draw at Lyon on Thursday.

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana received a prompt explanation by manager Ruben Amorim after being left out of the squad to face Newcastle, it has been reported.

It was announced on Sunday morning that Onana would not be in United’s squad for their Premier League clash against Newcastle.

The goalkeeper made two errors leading to a goal in the 2-2 Europa League quarter-final draw against Lyon on Thursday.

Onana’s recent form has concerned United fans, particularly as he started the season relatively strongly in goal and was one of the few bright spots of Erik ten Hag‘s final months in charge.

Amorim has now taken the decision to take Onana out of the firing line, with the reported line being that he has been rested rather than dropped by the Portuguese manager.

Backup goalkeeper Altay Bayindir is expected to replace him, with The Athletic reporting that he is set to be between the sticks against Newcastle for his first Premier League appearance.

According to BBC Sport, Amorim told Onana that he needed him to ‘rest and disconnect‘ from football after a difficult night in Lyon.

He is also said to have assured the Cameroon shot-stopper that he has not been permanently replaced and is available for selection for Thursday’s quarter-final second leg against Lyon at Old Trafford.

Amorim was asked about Onana’s mistakes in the first leg and chose to defend his player, telling reporters: “When one player has a mistake, all the team has a mistake, so we continue like that [to focus on the next game].

“We continue to do the same thing. Training, seeing the games, trying to choose the best eleven to win every match.

“The best thing is to look at the goals and all the actions that Andre had in the game, to talk with [the coaches]… this is the best way to help any player, to focus on the game, what happened and what we need to improve.”
