Manchester United ready to cash in on academy graduate to fund Matheus Cunha transfer

Manchester United are ready to cash in on Alejandro Garnacho to help fund their summer rebuild, talkSPORT understands.

United were open to offers for Garnacho during the January transfer window as any transfer fee received represents 100 per cent profit due to PSR rules surrounding academy graduates.

talkSPORT understands the Red Devils remain open to offers for the Argentine to help finance the signing of Wolves forward Matheus Cunha.

Garnacho, who is on the radar of Atletico Madrid, is also believed to be reluctantly open to leaving Old Trafford after struggling to find a defined role within Ruben Amorim’s style of playing inverted wingers.

United are keen to get the signing of Cunha wrapped up as quickly as possible but while Wolves are willing to accept staggered payments they want his full £62.5m release clause met.

Garnacho was one of the few United players who performed well at the start of the season, scoring eight goals in the first 20 games but has netted just twice since November.

The 20-year-old penned a new five-year deal in April 2023 which still has another three seasons remaining before it expires.

However, he could now make way for Ruben Amorim’s Old Trafford overhaul.

The Portuguese addressed the potential squad turnover at the end of this season following Sunday’s defeat to Wolves.

He explained: “This season is going to end like this so we need to take the positives and work on what we need to improve.

“We have to look at everything, our squad, what we have to do in the market. We will see.

“We talk every day about next season and with time we will get what we need to improve the team.”

Garnacho has previously attracted interest from several European clubs amid doubts surrounding his United future.

Atletico were strongly linked with a move for the winger during the January transfer window.

Meanwhile, talks with Napoli broke down on the eve of the deadline for new signings earlier in the campaign.

Garnacho has been with United since 2020 having joined the club’s academy from Atletico as a 16-year-old.

He has since made 137 first-team appearances for the Red Devils, providing 46 goal contributions across those matches.

The Argentina international has also won both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup with United.

Those triumphs included a goal in the FA Cup final victory over bitter rivals Manchester City last season.

Garnacho also won the Copa America with Argentina just two months after United’s Wembley heroics a year ago.
