Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is closing in on a return to the dugout after recovering from pneumonia.

The Toon boss has missed his team’s past three matches due to illness, with his assistant Jason Tindall deputising in charge.

Tindall and Graeme Jones oversaw the 4-1 victory over Manchester United and the 5-0 win against Crystal Palace, as well as last weekend’s 4-1 defeat at Aston Villa.

However, Howe is now closing in on a comeback as the race for the Champions League heats up.

When will Eddie Howe return to the dugout?

Howe will make his return to the dugout this weekend for Newcastle’s Premier League clash with Ipswich on Saturday, April 26.

The 47-year-old has reported no ill effects after returning to the training pitch on Wednesday and feels ready to resume his duties.

A statement read: “Newcastle United are delighted to confirm that Eddie Howe has returned to his duties at the club’s Training Centre.

“Eddie had recently been hospitalised with pneumonia and has now returned to work after a period of recovery.

“We thank supporters for their warm wishes.”

Following last weekend’s loss at Villa Park, Tindall was asked for the latest on Howe’s condition and his potential return.

“Until I’m told otherwise, then obviously that (taking charge of the team) is my duty and what I have to do,” Tindall said. “I’ve said it before, the most important thing for Ed is that he rests and he recovers. The more he does that, then the sooner he’ll be able to come and lead the team again.

“I’m not sure if there is any contact there, but as soon as there is any more news, then I’m sure the media team will update on that.” Tindall also admitted: “I certainly miss him, even more so on days like this.”

Howe is obsessed with his work, which is one of the reasons the Magpies have improved so much under his guidance, so he’ll want to get back as soon as possible.

In a statement released via the club, Howe said: “A huge thank you to everyone connected with Newcastle United and the wider football community for your messages and warm wishes. They have meant a lot to me and my family.

“I also want to pay tribute to our incredible NHS and the hospital staff who have treated me.

“I’m immensely grateful for the specialist care I’m receiving and, after a period of recovery, I look forward to being back as soon as possible.”
