In a recent report, journalist Pete O’Rourke mentioned that Aston Villa are locked in a three-way battle for Chelsea keeper Djordje Petrovic, who is currently playing on loan at Strasbourg. It has been stated that the Villans would have to rival Juventus and Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the race to land the Serbian shot-stopper.

Petrovic’s Good Run Of Form In French Football

Petrovic is having an impressive loan spell in France after he produced a run of eye-catching displays as Strasbourg’s primary keeper. The Serbian talent has been involved in 27 matches for the French club this season, conceding 31 goals and grabbing ten clean sheets in all competitions.

The 25-year-old deserves a ton of credit for averaging 1.0 clearances and 5.7 long balls per 90 minutes in Ligue 1. He has even distributed the ball relatively well based on his pass completion rate of 78.3% in the French top tier (stats via whoscored).

His current deal at his parent club Chelsea will expire in the summer of 2030, so it won’t be easy for the Villans to get a deal done for the Serbian goalie on the cheap this year.

Will Petrovic Be A Good Option For Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery?

Petrovic can be a safe pair of hands in between the sticks when he is playing with confidence on the field. He is a solid handler of the ball and usually clears the danger when needed on the defensive end of the field.

The Serbian sensation can use his quick reflexes to make a few important saves at the back for his team. However, he might need some time to prove his worth in Premier League football.

Based on his form at Strasbourg this season, we can expect Petrovic to enhance the quality of Aston Villa boss Unai Emery’s goalkeeping department. He has what it takes to rival Emiliano Martinez for a regular starting spot at Villa Park in the coming years.

At 25, Petrovic’s best years are ahead of him which makes him a decent option for the West Midlands club to consider this summer. He might even help the Villans compete across all fronts in the future. Therefore, Emery would be wise to launch a move to sign the Serbian keeper in this summer transfer period.
