Alisson has praised the impact of Arne Slot since taking over as Liverpool head coach and admitted there was uncertainty around the club when Jurgen Klopp left.

The charismatic German departed last summer and was replaced by Slot as the club began a new era, with Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes undertaking new executive roles behind the scenes. But the first 12 months have gone better than most anticipated, with the Reds on the verge of clinching the Premier League title.

A point on Sunday against Tottenham Hotspur will see the Reds guarantee a first-place finish and a record-equalling 20th top-flight title. It would also mean Slot would become the 12th coach to win the Premier League and would have already equalled the number of titles earned by Klopp on Merseyside.

It makes the sense of dread that greeted Klopp’s departure now feel unbelievable, but Alisson admits he was unsure what the future held 12 months ago.

“I think [there was] a lot of uncertainty for everybody,” the Brazilian told Sky Sports ahead of the Spurs game. “Speaking for myself, I think he was the captain of the ship. When he says he is going to leave, there was a lot of uncertainty. But we completed the story and started a new one.”

With one title all but sewn up now and talk of a busy summer intensifying, Alisson admits bigger challenges lie in store for Slot’s Reds.

“All the credit that he deserves, for making us believe in ourselves again. Going against all the challenges he had to be a replacement for Klopp,” the goalkeeper explained.

“But the players share the credit as well because we believe in him. Our biggest challenge will start now because it is part of Liverpool blood to transform doubters into believers.

“So yes, we are pleased with what we are achieving this season, and the manager is as well. But we want more. We want to keep doing these things for the club because it is so special and all we can do is give everything for the badge, for the people, and the city.”

Alisson has enjoyed another impressive season on Merseyside and is among the few members of the squad left from the last title-winning team in 2020. The former Roma man has missed 10 league matches this season but has kept 10 clean sheets from his 23 appearances to date.
