Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen ‘makes major call’ over future at Camp Nou

Andreas Christensen reportedly has no desire to leave Barcelona this summer, with the Denmark international intending to remain with the Catalan giants until his contract expires in the summer of 2026.

The 29-year-old has had an incredibly frustrating campaign due to injury, spending a lengthy period out with an Achilles issue before picking up a muscular problem, and he has only played once for Barcelona this term.

Christensen was again an unused substitute in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday evening, and he is down the pecking order when it comes to the centre-back spots at Camp Nou, with Pau Cubarsi, Ronald Araujo, Inigo Martinez and Eric Garcia all ahead of him.

The Dane proved to be an important player for the Catalan team during the 2023-24 campaign, though, making 42 appearances in all competitions, and he spent time in central midfield last term due to the club’s injury problems.

There has been speculation surrounding Christensen’s future of late, with a number of clubs believed to be interested in signing him during this summer’s transfer window, but according to SPORT, the ex-Chelsea defender wants to stay until the end of his contract.

The report claims that Christensen is confident that he will be able to earn the trust of Barcelona boss Hansi Flick next season, providing that he is able to stay clear from injury.

Christensen will allegedly sit down with senior figures from Barcelona this summer to discuss his future, but the expectation is that he will stay and fight for a first-team spot at Camp Nou next term.

Manchester United were linked with the Dane in January, with Christensen’s stock high in the Premier League following his strong performances for Chelsea.

The defender made 161 appearances for the Blues before leaving the club on a free transfer, and Barcelona are believed to have beaten off a host of competition to secure his signature on a four-year deal.

Cubarsi, Araujo, Martinez and Garcia are blocking Christensen’s route into the back four, so at least three of those would need to be injured at the same time for the Dane to earn a spot in the team.

Meanwhile, there is now even more competition in the middle of midfield, with Gavi, Pedri, Frenkie de Jong and Marc Casado all battling for spots in that area, so it is difficult to see where Christensen fits into the side.

That said, he has proven himself since arriving at Barcelona – there are few better options when it comes to rotation players, and it seems that the defender is more than happy to play that role during the 2025-26 campaign.
