Ibrahima Konate revels in ‘exceptional’ Liverpool title win – ‘We steamrolled the league!’

4 Min Read

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate loved every second of the Reds’ win over Spurs that clinched the Premier League title in style starting from the journey to Anfield.

As Arne Slot’s men drove to the stadium to take on Tottenham, the streets were turned red with shirts, scarves and flares. And it was a moment that the whole Liverpool team made sure it savored.

“It was unbelievable, honestly,” Konate told the French channel Canal+. “As soon as we got to the stadium, I knew we would win. It was special. What we felt was unprecedented. The players in the team bus were not even in their usual spots. We were all on our toes, watching the fans. I have no words to describe it.”

“Honestly, it’s exceptional,” the France center-back added when he was asked about how well the Reds had done. “Although there are a couple of games remaining, we steamrolled the league, and it’s done, eh?”

Goals from Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah helped Liverpool to a comfortable 5-1 win over Spurs. And for those who were there for the 2020 triumph, this was a very different experience.

“The last time we won it was a stranger time, but I suppose we kind of got that feeling against Man United at home,” Andy Robertson said. “It was pretty much done at that point with [being] 16 or 19 points clear.

“It’s not like quite clinching it and then obviously the world paused. It was quite unique, the way we did it.

“We enjoyed it, of course we did, but you can’t beat what we experienced today and how we went to the ground and the fans during and after the game. Nothing quite compares to that and I’m glad we got to experience it that way as well.”

Liverpool.com says: Konate has done a brilliant job alongside Virgil van Dijk this season. As one of the most accomplished defenders around, he needs to pen new terms sooner rather than later to avoid going into next season with under 12 months left on his existing contract.

He is far too good to lose, and as long as he and Van Dijk continue the way they are heading, another league title might not be too far away. Every title win is built on a solid base, and they have certainly offered that in the last few months.
