José Mourinho set to return to Premier League after four years with historic club

José Mourinho could be set for a shock return to the Premier League, with reports linking him to newly-promoted Leeds United. The Portuguese manager is reportedly considering a new challenge in England.

When one has to choose the best coaches in the history of the Premier League, the name of José Mourinho cannot leave a top five. And although it has been a long time since the Portuguese managed in the English league, and even more since the last time he won it, in England they see his return for next season as quite likely.

With a present in Fenerbahce, Mourinho has not been able to end the dominance of Galatasaray, which takes five points in the Super Lig and, barring any surprises, will be champion again. With that, The Special One’s passage through Turkish soccer could come to an end and, at 62 years old, he would undertake his return to the Premier League.

According to multiple British media, Mourinho’s return would be with a challenge that he had never taken before and would take over Leeds United, in the return to the first division of the team three times champion of the English league.

Leeds would dismiss Daniel Farke even though the coach managed to ensure the return of the Peacocks to the Premier with three dates in advance and continues to dispute the championship with Burnley. Both lead with 94 units and have secured their place in the first division for next season.

The challenge of staying up

One of the great problems in the Premier League is the stability of the newly promoted teams. Because of how the Financial Fair Play and the distribution of profits in the competition work, the teams that ascend from the Championship have a limited budget and cannot compete equally in the market with those already established in the league.

That is why they usually descend. There are only a few who manage to stay more than one season in the Premier League after their promotion from the second division, and those who do usually suffer with Financial Fair Play in just a couple of campaigns.

That will then be one of the great challenges that Mourinho will have in case of grabbing the team that won its last English league in the 1991/92 season, the last before the English First Division is transformed into the Premier League.

The other challenge will be personal. Mou wants revenge after his last step in the Premier, which was as coach of Tottenham and that ended with his historic streak of winning at least one title in each club he managed.

Mourinho’s potential return to the Premier League with Leeds United would be a fascinating storyline, as he looks to prove himself once again in English soccer.
