If a recent report from Rangers Review is believed to be true, versatile Dundee youngster Josh Mulligan is expected to join the Gers once his contract at Dens Park expires at the end of the current campaign. They have already tied Lyall Cameron down from the Dee on a pre-contract agreement in January, and the young Scotsman could now unite with his teammate and compatriot at Ibrox from next season onwards.
The 22-year-old former Scotland youth international progressed through Dundee’s youth ranks before breaking into their first-team squad against St Mirren in the final game of the 2018–19 season. He was then loaned out to Cove Rangers and Peterhead, and the minutes in the lower leagues helped him cement a regular role in the Dark Blues midfield since February 2022.
Dundee eventually got relegated from the Premiership by the end of the 2021-22 season, but scripted an immediate top-flight return with Mulligan making 42 appearances across competitions. While he featured sporadically last term, Tony Docherty has so far deployed him on the right of their three-man midfield week in and week out. The young academy ace could also slot in as a central midfielder or right fullback, and the manager has now fuelled speculations by reacting to the rumours.
“His performance levels have improved time and time again and he’s become a really influential player in the squad. Josh is in really good form and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if there’s attention because his performances would merit that.”
Rangers have to pay a compensation fee for both Mulligan and Cameron, but the Dundee duo would bolster the squad depth and quality, considering many uncertainties in the upcoming months. Interim boss Barry Ferguson’s future remains up in the air; also, Kevin Thelwell will join as their sporting director when his Everton contract expires in the summer. The takeover talks are still in progress, and their finances and transfer budget depend on how much cash the new owners will inject.

The Light Blues also have Connor Barron, who joined last summer from Aberdeen on a Bosman. Moreover, the emergence of 18-year-old Bailey Rice must be encouraging for the Glasgow giants. Nicolas Raskin has been exquisite deep down the midfield, but the trio have been more comfortable in a central role rather than operating box-to-box as wide midfielders.
Mulligan’s physical presence, creativity and technical traits could save Rangers millions if they secure his services in due time, manage his minutes carefully and let him flourish as a utility option.
