Two titans of European football, Barcelona and Inter Milan meet again in the Champions League this season, both vying for a place in the final.
In previous encounters, the Catalan club have been more successful than their Italian counterparts, but Inter came out on top when it mattered most – at the end of an epic 2010 semi-final.
Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.
Head-to-head record
Previous meetings: 12
Barcelona wins: 6
Draws: 4
Inter Milan wins: 2
Barcelona were unbeaten through their first four meetings with Inter, starting off the rivalry with a 3-0 home win in early 2003. Javier Saviola, Phillip Cocu and Patrick Kluivert were all on target at Camp Nou, before a goalless draw followed in Milan eight days later.
Having first met in the Champions League’s short-lived second group stage, the clubs were paired again six years on – this time during the traditional autumn group phase.
After another 0-0 draw at San Siro, first-half goals from Gerard Pique and Pedro gave Pep Guardiola‘s side maximum points in Catalonia, but that was just a pre-cursor to dramatic events later that season.
When Barca were drawn against Inter in the 2010 semi-finals, Pedro scored again in Italy, before Wesley Sneijder, Maicon and Diego Milito turned a thrilling first leg around for Jose Mourinho‘s men.
Then, back on home turf, Pique put the Blaugrana ahead in the second leg, but the 10-man Nerazzurri held on bravely to reach the final, where they beat Bayern Munich thanks to Milito’s brace.
More than eight years later, the teams reconvened in the group phase, with a goal in each half earning Barcelona victory at Camp Nou. A fortnight on, Mauro Icardi‘s late strike salvaged a home draw for Inter after Malcom had edged their visitors in front.
It was just one year before they met again at the same stage, as Luis Suarez scored twice in a 2-1 home win for Barca; then, Ansu Fati became the Champions League’s youngest goalscorer – aged just 17 years and 40 days – as another Barcelona success saw Inter knocked out.
Most recently, the 2022 group phase pitched the two former champions together once more: Hakan Calhanoglu scored the only goal at San Siro, before a six-goal thriller unfolded in Spain.
After Robert Lewandowski hauled Barca level at 2-2 eight minutes from full time, Robin Gosens struck back in the 89th minute; however, Inter’s hopes of a first win at Camp Nou were still dashed as Lewandowski equalised again during stoppage time.
