Cody Gakpo has hinted that the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool is not as clear-cut as some may think. The 26-year-old right-back’s current deal will expire on 30 June and Real Madrid is poised to make a move on a free transfer.
Though Reds’ teammates Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah have recent commitments to their names, having signed new two-year agreements this month, Trent’s next move remains uncertain. Speculation was rife in March about an established five-year agreement with Real Madrid.
However, Gakpo offered a tease amid the team’s joyous Premier League title celebrations on Sunday, suggesting on LFC TV that options remain open. He said “Now with Mo and Virgil staying, and hopefully Trent as well, they can keep building.”
The comments followed Liverpool’s thumping 5-1 victory over Tottenham, where they overturned a deficit to clinch the championship. Post-game, while various players faced the press, Alexander-Arnold was noticeably absent—continuing his discreet approach regarding future plans, and echoing his silence post-Leicester match where he netted the decider.
Alexander-Arnold refused to be drawn on speculation about his future following his side’s win last weekend, stating: “I have said all season that I am not going to speak on my situation. I am not going to go into the details.”
“But days like today are always special. Scoring goals, playing games, winning games, winning titles – they are special moments for me and I am glad to do my part.”

Reds boss Arne Slot seemed to suggest that Alexander-Arnold has shown little indication of wanting to leave Anfield in the near future, speaking highly of the right-back’s commitment to the Reds.
Slot stated: “The fans of Liverpool, everyone who watches football for the last five, six or seven years, knows he is an incredible full-back, has been an incredible full-back for this football club and let’s see what the future brings.”
“Every time he plays and trains with us he shows his commitment. He’s worked so hard to be back already and the moment he is on the pitch he shows me what a great football player he is and how much he’s involved in us trying to achieve our goals this season. He’s worked so hard during the whole season and now in his rehab to be back with the team again.”
