Liverpool may have won the Premier League title, but Ally McCoist believes the club are still short on a ‘proper goalscorer’.
It’s why the Scottish great feels the Reds must push the boat out and land Harry Kane in what would be a ‘dream move’.
Mohamed Salah has led the way for Liverpool with 28 league goals this term, a figure that has him firmly on course to win the golden boot.
It doubles as the most goals Salah has scored for the Reds in a single Premier League season and, with four games remaining, there’s every chance he cracks the 30-goal mark.
Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo, who both predominantly feature on the left wing, have chipped in with 12 and nine league goals respectively.
However, it is up top where goals have run dry for the Reds.
Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez have shared the starting duties as the focal point in Liverpool’s attack but neither man has truly staked their claim.
From 23 league appearances, Jota has scored just six times.
As for Nunez, who moved from Benfica in the summer of 2023 for an initial £64million, he has just five goals from 26 league appearances.
With Nunez and Jota’s collective troubles, McCoist felt a ‘proper goalscorer’, namely Kane, would be the cherry on top and ensure Liverpool’s dominance for years to come.
“I look at Liverpool just now and they could probably still do with an out-and-out number nine, proper goalscorer,” McCoist said on talkSPORT Breakfast.
“Diaz has been brilliant, Salah has been absolutely out of this world and they’ve got midfielders chipping in.
“I don’t see it happening, but see, if Harry Kane won the Bundesliga, which he will do, and then fancy if he would come back to England?
“I just think, for Liverpool, that would be a dream move for them.”
Kane has scored goals for fun since joining German giants Bayern Munich from Tottenham in August 2023.
The England skipper has netted 24 times in 29 league fixtures this term and his goals have Bayern on course to wrestle back control of the Bundesliga from Bayer Leverkusen.
It would also mark the first team trophy in Kane’s career, even though he may not be on the pitch for the moment Bayern are crowned as champions once again.
However, Kane will not come cheap given he moved for an eye-watering £100m and has become central to Bayern’s attack.
Kane wasn’t the only headline name floated around as a potential option for Liverpool to pursue in the summer.
Watford great Troy Deeney threw Newcastle star Alexander Isak’s name into the mix.
Only Salah has scored more league goals than Isak this term as the Swede has registered an impressive 22-goal haul.
“Just give them the title for the next years if they get that fella,” Deeney said.
Time will tell as to how Liverpool attack the summer transfer window and if they look to shake up their strike force.
But McCoist evidently believed it’s a must-do and it may prove to be the difference in winning back-to-back Premier League titles.
Outside of Manchester City’s recent dominance, no Premier League team has won consecutive titles since Manchester United in the 2007/08 and 2008/09 campaigns.
“I think the secret for Liverpool now is to do what Manchester City arguably haven’t done, is to add to your team in a position of strength,” McCoist said.
“When you’re in a position of strength, get yourself stronger.”
