‘Blessed’: What Sir Alex Ferguson said about Scott McTominay at Man United before he was sold to Napoli

Whilst Manchester United continue to struggle in the Premier League, Scott McTominay is having a spectacular time in Italy with Napoli.

Since leaving Man United in the summer, McTominay has played 35 games for Napoli in all competitions, scoring 12 goals in the process.

Of course, the Scotland international netted twice against Torino last weekend as Napoli begin to close in on the Serie A title.

Napoli are three points clear of Inter Milan with four games to go and McTominay has been a crucial part of their success under Antonio Conte.

Of course, it’s almost impossible to watch the 28-year-old’s performances without wondering if United made a mistake.

After all, Rio Ferdinand compared McTominay to Jude Bellingham recently.

Sir Alex Ferguson was convinced about Scott McTominay’s talent

And with United’s hasty decision to sell McTominay in mind, it is now interesting to revisit some comments Sir Alex Ferguson made about his compatriot back in 2021.

McTominay’s United debut came long after Ferguson’s retirement but he was the one who signed the midfielder to the club’s academy.

And when speaking in an interview with BBC Sport a few years ago, Ferguson praised McTominay’s quality as well as his attitude, perhaps explaining why United were wrong to sell him to Napoli.

Ferguson said: “We’ve been blessed. I signed him when he was seven or eight years of age.

“McTominay is of a similar type to Darren [Fletcher]. A bit long, lanky, a good winner of the ball, a good turn of pace going forward, a great attitude to the game.

“It’s really rewarding for me to see a Scot coming through. Darren was one. [Brian] McClair was a great Scot for us, a fantastic player.

“We’ve been blessed with great Scots right through going back to the King, Denis Law. It makes you proud.”

Ruben Amorim needs to learn from United’s Scott McTominay mistake

Right now Amorim’s side are essentially lacking a bit of everything: goals, quality, experience and leadership.

And whilst McTominay has clearly enjoyed an upturn in form under Conte in Italy, he was capable of providing all of the above at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag didn’t seem to sufficiently believe in McTominay’s talent despite all of the clutch moments he enjoyed at United, even just entering the game as a substitute.

An underrated talent at United who is now being lauded every step of the way in Serie A.

And perhaps United would be well-advised to lean on the likes of Harry Maguire and Mason Mount during their rebuild — two players who definitely have the right attitude to bring the club back to glory.
