With four games remaining this season, Liverpool has already wrapped up the Premier League title. Still with Chelsea, Arsenal, Brighton and Crystal Palace to play, Arne Slot has become a champion at the first time of asking.

After the Premier League title win in 2020 didn’t have proper celebrations because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this time, there is nothing getting in the way of the party. And Liverpool’s official social media channels took the opportunity to aim a subtle jibe at the Reds’ rivals during the aftermath of the game.

Posting a picture of the Premier League table, an asterisk was placed next to Liverpool’s name. “*There are still four games to play,” a note at the bottom of the graphic read.

Liverpool fans have had to put up with claims that their first title ‘didn’t count’ because it was won when the pandemic had hit, despite the fact that the Reds won 26 of their first 27 matches that season and were well on course to win the league before the fixtures were paused.

The graphic also features a reference to Liverpool’s song about winning the title in May. It hasn’t even reached that point in the calendar year yet, and the Reds are champions already.

“It will be amazing,” Virgil van Dijk said when asked about lifting the trophy after the final game of the season. “Very emotional. Even today, it was an emotional day for me and my family.

“The whole week was quite slow, it took ages before matchday. I think every Liverpool fan around the world probably felt like that. And then obviously it’s matchday and then you see so many fans already in red outside, getting ready from early on, and you just want to get the job done.

“I’m very, very happy that we did. When the moment is there that I can lift the trophy in front of our beautiful supporters, I think I will be very emotional.”

Liverpool.com says: The last title counted, of course, but this one feels much more special for players and fans. Mohamed Salah said that himself on the pitch at the final whistle. The 2020 triumph was the first in reality, but this feels like the first one.
