Manchester United lineup vs. Athletic Bilbao: Predicted XI for Europa League semi-final first leg, as Amorim weighs up changes

2 Min Read

Returning to an eventful Europa League journey, and leaving their domestic woes to one side, Manchester United will meet Athletic Bilbao at San Mames on Thursday.

Into yet another European semi-final, the Premier League giants will seek a precious lead ahead of next week’s return leg, though their lineup options are somewhat limited by injuries.

While Ruben Amorim hopes to have Amad Diallo, Toby Collyer and Matthijs de Ligt available again, none would be considered to start; meanwhile, reserve goalkeeper Altay Bayindir and young defender Ayden Heaven are also unlikely to play any part.

Already missing Diogo Dalot, Joshua Zirkzee and Lisandro Martinez, Amorim may decide to make minimal changes to the team that started Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Bournemouth.

After finally ending his long goal drought, Rasmus Hojlund is set to feature up front, while United captain Bruno Fernandes should again join Alejandro Garnacho in the Danish striker’s supporting cast.

Kobbie Mainoo, Christian Eriksen and Mason Mount are also in the mix, but Manuel Ugarte and experienced campaigner Casemiro could be paired in central midfield.

Elsewhere, Luke Shaw‘s timely comeback from his latest long layoff might offer more balance to the Red Devils’ leaky defence, allowing Noussair Mazraoui to operate out wide on the right.

Manchester United possible starting lineup: Onana; Yoro, Maguire, Shaw; Mazraoui, Ugarte, Casemiro, Dorgu; Fernandes, Garnacho; Hojlund
