Paul Scholes tells Trent Alexander-Arnold which team to choose out of Liverpool and Real Madrid

Paul Scholes has given his thoughts on what Trent Alexander-Arnold should “bear in mind” as the right-back’s current Liverpool contract nears its expiration.

Alexander-Arnold, 26, was part of the Liverpool side that won the Premier League after a convincing 5-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday (April 27).

And despite being part of the jubilant celebration, he did not speak to the media gathered inside the ground, seemingly in a bid to avoid any questions about where his future lies.

Of course, it has been widely reported for several months that the England right-back may join Real Madrid on a free transfer upon the expiration of his Liverpool contract at the end of June.

Fans even gave their theory on the player’s brother’s Instagram story, which he posted in the hours following the game.

And several big names from the world of football have issued their thoughts on what Alexander-Arnold’s decision should be with Wayne Rooney explaining how “Real are the biggest club in the world with an incredible history, so it would be a massive opportunity and I’d understand if he felt it was too good to turn down”, in a column for BBC Sport back in March.

Now, Rooney’s former Manchester United and England teammate Scholes has given his take.

“It will be a difficult decision for him,” Scholes said in a column for TNT Sports. “When you’re a local lad, it’s very hard to leave your club, especially when you’ve just won the Premier League. He’s with a big club at Liverpool and if you’re not at a big club it’s easy to make that move to Real Madrid. The thing he has to bear in mind is where is he more likely to win trophies for the next few years.

“I suppose Real Madrid have had a little bit of a slump, but their slumps don’t seem to last that long. There’s definitely more competition in England with Liverpool. In an attempt to win the Premier League and Champions League, you’ll compete with Man City, Arsenal and even Chelsea might spend big again, so it’s more difficult to win here. Do Liverpool look like a team that can go on and win the league for the next five or six years? I don’t think so yet and I might be proven wrong, but when City won the league, you thought yeah, they’ll win it again.

“But with Liverpool, you’re just not quite sure and football is all about winning trophies. So, for Trent, it’s where he thinks he’ll win the most trophies, and you’d probably slightly favour Real Madrid, purely because of their history in the Champions League and not that much competition in the league apart from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.”
