When Liverpool appointed Arne Slot to succeed Jurgen Klopp, there was no expectation the Reds would go on to win the Premier League in his first season in charge at Anfield.
And yet, the Dutchman has done just that, sparking huge celebrations for the club’s fans and players as they match Klopp’s 2019/20 achievement. That season, the Reds blew away their closest rivals, Manchester City, by setting an outrageous pace, winning 26 of their opening 27 Premier League games.
Similarly, this season also saw Slot’s Liverpool mirror Klopp’s team, in that they lost just once in the Premier League before the turn of the year. While stylistically they are different, and they have had more draws than Klopp’s team throughout the season, it took until April 6 for Slot’s Liverpool to lose a second game in the Premier League following their September defeat to Nottingham Forest.
With this now being the second time Liverpool has won the Premier League – a 20th first division title in total, matching Manchester United’s tally – comparisons between the two teams were always bound to be made.
And with that in mind, Liverpool.com took a look at just where the 2020 Liverpool squad are now…
Still at Liverpool
There are plenty of the 2020 squad who have been part of this season’s successful title win. Alisson Becker, Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Andy Robertson and Caoimhin Kelleher were all part of Klopp’s title-winning squad.
And this season, just like during the 2019/20 campaign, the likes of Salah and Van Dijk have been pivotal in guiding the Reds back to the top of the Premier League.

That season also saw the likes of Jones, Kelleher and Elliott make only a handful of appearances in all competitions. However, this season, Jones has featured regularly alongside Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai in midfield, while Kelleher has deputized admirably during Alisson’s absences. Elliott has seen his opportunities this season limited following an injury at the start of the campaign.
There is also every chance that this could also be the final season on Merseyside for some of the Liverpool players to have won two Premier League titles.
With the impending arrival of Giorgi Mamardashvilli from Valencia this summer, Kelleher will likely be moved on, allowing him to go out and be a No.1 elsewhere. Alexander-Arnold looks set to be heading to Real Madrid on a free, whilst it is not improbable Liverpool could look to sell Robertson, Elliott or Gomez.
Goalkeepers
While Alisson and Kelleher still remain at Anfield, the two other goalkeepers in Liverpool’s 2020 title-winning squad, Adrian and Andy Lonergan, moved on.

An injury to Alisson saw Adrian make 18 appearances in all competitions between the sticks for the Reds that year, while Lonergan did not make an appearance during his year at Liverpool.
Adrian currently plays for Real Betis in La Liga, while Lonergan is now with Wigan as its first-team goalkeeping coach.
Defenders
Plenty of defenders from the 2020 title winning squad have moved on over the years. Joel Matip, who made over 200 appearances for the Reds, called time on his career back in October, having suffered an ACL injury in December 2023 while playing for Liverpool.
Nathaniel Clyne, who missed the whole 2019/20 season due to injury, now currently plays for Crystal Palace having left Liverpool in 2020 – the right-back wasn’t actually present for the trophy presentation, with the club choosing not to renew his contract before it expired at the end of June. Dejan Lovren, who made 10 appearances in the Premier League during the 2020 title winning campaign, is turning out for Greek side PAOK.

Nat Phillips, Ki-Jana Hoever and Sepp van den Berg, who were all part of Liverpool’s first team squad that year, are currently playing for Derby County (on loan from Liverpool), Auxerre (on loan from Wolves) and Brentford respectively.
Neco Williams, who made six Premier League appearances for the Reds in 2019/20, has gone on to become a dependable player for Nottingham Forest, capable of playing both left and right-back.
Midfielders
Liverpool’s 2025 midfield looks a lot different from 2020. Only Jones and Elliott remain from the Reds squad that lifted the Premier League title then, with Fabinho, Georginio Wijnaldum, James Milner, Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Adam Lallana and Xherdan Shaqiri all having moved on in recent years.
Fabinho and Wijnaldum are currently playing in the Saudi Pro League for Al-Ittihad and Al-Ettifaq, while Milner is with Brighton & Hove Albion.

Keita returned to Germany in 2023 to play for Werder Bremen following his time at Liverpool before moving to join Hungarian side Ferencvaros on-loan at the start of this year.
Henderson, Liverpool’s 2020 captain, left Anfield in the summer of 2023 to join Al-Ettifaq, only to leave the Middle East after a few months. His contract with the Saudi Pro League side was terminated in January 2024, with Henderson going on to sign for Ajax on a two-year-deal.

Following a mixed first season in Amsterdam, Henderson and Ajax look set to win the Eredivisie this season after having last won it back in 2022.
Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lallana and Shaqiri currently play for Besiktas, Southampton and FC Basel respectively.
Forwards
And much like Liverpool’s midfield, the forward line looks a lot different to how it did back in 2020.
Only Salah remains of Liverpool’s attacking options. The Egyptian struck up an unbelievable understanding with Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, with the trio becoming arguably one of, if not the most, formidable frontlines ever seen in the Premier League.

Mane, who bagged 18 league goals in 2020, departed Liverpool in 2022 to join Bayern Munich, before moving to Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League a season later. Firmino, who scored nine, left Anfield in 2023 for Al-Ahli.
The other forwards in Liverpool’s squad were Takumi Minamino, Rhian Brewster and Reds cult hero Divock Origi. Minamino joined Monaco in 2022 and Brewster, who did not make a Premier League appearance for Liverpool, joined Sheffield United in 2020.
Origi, meanwhile, is currently at AC Milan, although the Belgian has been frozen out of their first team plans.
