Squad building is difficult.
Nothing is official yet, but all signs point to Bayern Munich center-back Eric Dier inking a deal with AS Monaco for next season. There was some speculation that Dier would get a contract offer from Bayern Munich. but it would all be to no avail now.
Recently, Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl addressed the Dier situation and indicated the Englishman was important to the team, but did not seem ready to commit to a longer stay in Bavaria.
“Eric has underlined his importance since Dayot Upamecano’s injury and shown how solid he is. He’s there and knows what he can do,” Eberl said, via ransport (and captured by @iMiaSanMia) but stopped short of confirming any plans of keeping Dier. “He’s a very, very important player for us in this phase. We’ll see who’s in the squad [for next season] on August 1.”
For the first half of the 2024/25 season, it seemed as of Dier’s contract at Bayern Munich was never going to be extended past 2025. Though he had been surprisingly excellent and had developed into a starter under Thomas Tuchel, new head coach Vincent Kompany had the Englishman rooted to the bench for the majority of the Hinrunde.
But things change. Fellow center-backs Kim Min-Jae and Dayot Upamecano have struggled with injuries in the Rückrunde and gave Dier a chance to prove he deserves to be a more important member of the squad.
The former Tottenham Hotspur player has subsequently again worked his way to a more important role as the Rückrunde (second half of the season) has gone on and Eberl has admitted Dier’s importance to the squad.
It has long been said that Dier is an imperfect fit for Kompany’s squad and it certainly seemed that way in the first half of the season. Now, though, Dier proved once again how important he can be to a team…and next season, AS Monaco could be the benefactor of Dier’s performances.
