Liverpool is considering a $68million move for Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller, according to reports.
The Reds’ midfield has been at the core of the team’s convincing Premier League title victory, with Ryan Gravenberch starting every game from a no.6 role. He has often been accompanied by Alexis Mac Allister, with Dominik Szoboszlai in a more advanced position, although Curtis Jones has often started games.
But, in several matches in the latter stages of the season, Liverpool’s midfield was overrun and outfought. Particularly in the Carabao Cup final defeat to Newcastle United, the Reds lost the battle in the middle, and subsequently the match.
It was similar in the Champions League trip to Paris Saint-Germain – although Liverpool did win that game – and the Premier League defeat at the hands of Fulham in early April. An additional holding midfielder to shield the back four, retain possession, and offer physicality in the middle could be required in the summer transfer market.
Martin Zubimendi had been identified as an option last year, but the Real Sociedad star opted to remain with his boyhood club. He has since been linked with a move to Arsenal ahead of the 2025/25 campaign.
Liverpool’s search for a new midfielder could see it move for Stiller, as per Fichajes. The Spanish outlet states the German’s “ tactical maturity and his ability to organize the game from the base [of midfield]” have attracted Liverpool’s attention, with Arne Slot already expressing to the board that he is a player high up on his list of priorities.
The Reds are said to be willing to offer €60M ($68M/£51M) for the 24-year-old, a figure that is around Stuttgart’s asking price. Stiller has started 29 of the side’s 30 Bundesliga matches this term, missing one through suspension.
He came through the Bayern Munich youth system before joining Hoffenheim in 2021. After two years at the Rhein Neckar Arena, Stiller signed for Stuttgart and has since established himself as one of the league’s most exciting young midfielders.
He has been included in three of the last four German international squads, earning four caps so far, and experienced Champions League soccer earlier this season with Stuttgart. He started in all eight matches, including games against Real Madrid and PSG.
Stiller is a rare goalscorer – he has netted just five in 78 Stuttgart appearances – but has proved more adept in a creative sense and has provided eight Bundesliga assists this term.
