Can the Bayern Munich men catch up to the Frauen?

Dual title celebrations are on deck.

Bayern Munich has a chance to do what it last did at the end of the 2022/23 season: celebrate both the men’s and women’s domestic league titles.

That year, the dramatics were left late as both teams did not confirm their status as champions until the final matchday. This time it has seemed inevitable for some time — but so far only the Frauen have managed to secure the title officially following a 3-1 win over SC Freiburg on Sunday:

The men have a chance to join them with a win over RB Leipzig this weekend. Bayern president Herbert Hainer spoke about the prospects of a joint celebration.

“That would be the plan,” Hainer said in remarks captured by @iMiaSanMia. “But for that to happen, we still have to become German champions with the men’s team. The probability is very high. We’ve never made a secret of the fact that we want to become German champions again.

“I think it shows that after last season, in which we only finished third, we’re setting ourselves new goals and pursuing them intensively — so that we can now win the title again. We made it very clear from the start of the season that the league is the most important title, because you have to prove it throughout the entire season. Together, we’ll most likely achieve it again.”

Hainer also pointed out that the Frauen this year have a chance for a double — having reached the DFB-Pokal Final, to be played this Thursday against SV Werder Bremen (kick-off at 10:00 AM EDT). An example for the men?

“Yes, that should be a goal for the men’s team,” Hainer continued. “We definitely want to go back to Berlin. We haven’t been there in a long time. But I have to say, I’m incredibly happy for the women’s team. And if they manage the double, that would be historic. We’ve never had that before. And so we’re all looking forward to Thursday with the Pokal final.”
