Chelsea will be Liverpool’s first Premier League opponent since the Reds were confirmed as champions with a 5-1 win over Tottenham last Sunday, and the Blues will be expected to applaud the Reds out onto the pitch.

Arsenal – who gave Liverpool a Guard of Honour in 2020 – Brighton and Crystal Palace will be the other Premier League sides expected to partake in this tradition before the 2024/25 campaign ends.

The shoe was on the other foot back in 2015 when Liverpool gave Chelsea a Guard of Honour at Stamford Bridge – after Jose Mourinho led the Blues to the 2014/15 title – something Steven Gerrard was not too happy about.

Steven Gerrard said giving Chelsea a Guard of Honour was “not nice”

The Liverpool legend did not hide his true feelings whatsoever when asked how it felt to line up and applaud Chelsea – roughly 12 months on from his infamous slip against the Blues at Anfield.

Gerrard told Sky Sports: “It’s not nice when you’re doing it for other people, but this football club has always shown respect and the guard of honour comes with tradition.

“Chelsea have won the league, they are champions, have a terrific manager, and deserve the guard of honour today, but it certainly wasn’t nice doing it.”

Gerrard, who once rejected Real Madrid, scored in the game to – at least – ensure Chelsea were unable to celebrate three points as well as make Liverpool honour them, equalising in the 44th minute after John Terry scored within just five minutes.

When Bernardo Silva disrespected Liverpool

Hopefully, every Chelsea player respects the Guard of Honour, unlike Bernardo Silva back in 2020.

The Portugal international showed absolutely no appreciation whatsoever for Liverpool winning the Premier League in the 2019/20 campaign, opting not to applaud, before even leaving the Guard of Honour prematurely.

That was particularly disappointing to see, and hopefully, Enzo Maresca instructs his Chelsea players to show sportsmanship on Sunday instead of a disrespectful act like that.
