Exclusive: Blow for Manchester United and Tottenham as Real Madrid enter the fray for top target

3 Min Read

TBR Football can exclusively reveal that Jonathan Tah’s representatives remain in discussions with a host of top European clubs – including multiple Premier League sides – as the German international prepares to make a high-profile free transfer this summer.

Tah, who has been a defensive pillar in Bayer Leverkusen’s title-winning campaign, is now a target for several English clubs.

Tottenham and Manchester United remain interested in Tah, having held talks with the 29-year-old earlier this year, as first revealed by TBR Football in February.

In addition, TBR Football understands that Manchester City, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Aston Villa have all maintained contact with Tah’s camp in recent months.

However, interest in Tah now stretches beyond the Premier League – and one of Europe’s biggest clubs has entered the picture.

Real Madrid join race to sign Jonathan Tah

TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey has been informed that Real Madrid have made contact over a potential deal for Jonathan Tah, with the Spanish giants viewing him as a potential addition ahead of a big summer.

Madrid are looking to appoint Xabi Alonso as their new manager, and it is believed that Alonso would like to bring Tah to Madrid.

The La Liga side’s involvement adds a new dimension to the race and could significantly influence Tah’s final decision.

Barcelona have also been in talks, with new head coach Hansi Flick eager to bring the defender to Camp Nou.

Bayern Munich, meanwhile, remain keen and have held early conversations regarding a summer switch.

The emergence of Real Madrid in the chase for Jonathan Tah represents a major setback for Premier League clubs vying for his signature.

The pair have enjoyed enormous success together at Leverkusen, with Alonso playing a key role in taking Tah’s performances to another level.

He was a big part of Alonso’s side that went on to win the Bundesliga in 2023/24 season.

That pre-existing trust and tactical understanding could now give Madrid the edge over other clubs in Europe and England.
