Pep Guardiola insists he won’t retire when he leaves Manchester City but will take some time away from football.

Guardiola began his legendary tenure at the Etihad Stadium in 2016 after delivering huge success at Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

The Spaniard has won six Premier League titles and the Champions League with City, and signed a two-year extension in November.

His contract now runs until 2027 and when speaking to ESPN Brasil, he revealed his intentions of taking a break when he leaves City.

“After my contract with City, I’m going to stop. I’m sure,” he said.

“I don’t know if I’m going to retire, but I’m going to take a break. How I want to be remembered, I don’t know.”

And when Sky Sports asked him about his future plans, he echoed his previous comments but made it clear that it won’t happen soon.

“I didn’t say I’m leaving now, or the end of the season,” he said before their 1-0 win against Wolves. “Well, if they sack me, yes!

“I said when I finish my time here, I don’t know, one year, two years, three years, four, five, six, I don’t know, I will take a break.

“So I’m not retiring, but I will take a break, for sure.”

He then reiterated: “When I finish here, I will take a break. I need to make a stop, that’s all.”

Guardiola’s arrival nine years ago marked the beginning of City’s dominance in English football.

Last season, they became the first Premier League team in history to win four consecutive titles.

During his near-decade stint at the club, only Chelsea and Liverpool have been crowned English champions other than City.

The 2024/25 campaign has been his toughest yet as their form towards the end of last year saw their title challenge quickly vanish.

City were also knocked out of the Champions League in the knockout phase play-offs by Real Madrid.

However, they are still in contention to win the FA Cup and will play Crystal Palace in the final on May 17.

Their win against Wolves has also sent them third in the Premier League table with three matches remaining.
