‘You’d wince’: Kyle Walker says £11m player used to always smash into Victor Wanyama during Tottenham training

Victor Wanyama wasn’t the type of player you’d want to mess with at Tottenham Hotspur.

Indeed, Christian Eriksen says Victor Wanyama is the strongest player he’s ever seen, and he’s played with some serious powerhouses over the years.

Wanyama wasn’t always brilliant for Tottenham, but he was a wrecking-ball of a footballer who would intimidate almost every opponent he faced.

However, according to Kyle Walker, there was one player at Spurs who gave as good as he got against Wanyama in training.

Speaking on his podcast, Kyle Walker was discussing some of the toughest tacklers in football.

The full-back has dished out some crunching tackles over his own over the years, but according to Walker, Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele used to always smash into one another in Tottenham training.

Dembele was another incredibly strong player, and he’d never shy away from a battle with Wanyama.

“I bet you’ve come out of someone and you’re thinking, wow, you’ve just gone into one. And it’s like that sound, isn’t it?” Walker was asked.

“Yeah, I remember, I remember at Tottenham, when Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele was there. And in training, you used to hear that sound of, you know, like the legs just smashing into each other. And that were two big, big lads.

“You’d wince, you know, like when they went into a challenge together, because you know, they were both fully committed to it. It wasn’t, didn’t want to hurt each other. Obviously, they’re playing both for the same team, but it showed the desire and they wanted to be the best in training.

“And I think that just shows, you know, why they both had such fantastic careers.”

Wanyama and Dembele used to lay into one another in Tottenham training, but when they combined on the pitch, they were a formidable midfield partnership.

Indeed, Wanyama and Dembele were a brilliantly well-balanced midfield, Wanyama was a fantastic holding player, while Dembele was a brilliant ball progressor.

Dembele was underrated at Tottenham in a lot of ways, and his record alongside Wanyama speaks for itself.

Nine losses in 47 games is a fantastic record for a Tottenham midfield, especially when you look at the fact Spurs have lost more than half of their league games so far this season.

Spurs’ midfield has been a big problem this term, and they’d probably give anything to have two players like Wanyama and Dembele anchoring the centre of the park right now.
