Liverpool transfer news as new contract planned and $53M right-back eyed

Liverpool will hold contract talks with Luis Diaz at the end of the season as the club plans to bring his salary in line with its other top players.

Diaz is currently on the same terms that he agreed when he signed for the club in January 2022. As such, he’s paid far less than some of Liverpool’s biggest stars. But he has been an important player for Arne Slot’s team this season and Sky Sports says that Liverpool is set to offer a deal that reflects his status, and wards off transfer speculation.

He will not earn anything like the money that Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are on — they are understood to be viewed as special cases who do not fit into the wage structure that the rest of the squad is subjected to — but he is set for a significant pay hike.

According to Capology, Diaz currently earns £55,000 ($73,000) per week, which is significantly lower than players of a similar standing in the squad.

Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, and Federico Chiesa are all reported to earn more than double the amount that Diaz takes home, and Diaz could be forgiven for finding that galling given Chiesa has barely played all season and the Colombian has scored more goals than Gakpo, Nunez, and Jota.

Diaz has been linked with a move away from Liverpool, with Barcelona said to be keen, although it’s difficult to see where he would fit into Hansi Flick’s side, with Raphinha and Lamine Yamal shining on the flanks for the Blaugrana.

Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr has also been linked with a move for Diaz, who has been at Liverpool for three-and-a-half years after joining from Porto in January of 2022.

Meanwhile, Liverpool is thought to be one of the teams interested in Andrea Cambiaso of Juventus — but Manchester City has moved into pole position, according to Football Insider.

The 25-year-old full-back has reportedly been identified at Anfield as an ideal heir to Trent Alexander-Arnold, but Cambiaso is “very keen” on City, which has held extensive talks with Juventus.

The Italian side is resigned to selling players if it misses out on the Champions League. Cambiaso could be available for as little as $53 million (£40 million).
